Ayub Nuri - Rudaw Somaliland declared independence from Somalia on May 18, 1991. It had been part of Somalia for 31 years and after decades of suffering and massacre at the hands of the central government of Somalia, says the foreign minister, they decided they had enough and embarked on a struggle for independence. The Republic of Somaliland is not formally recognized by the United Nations or any country in the world, though they maintain good relations with a number of countries, especially neighboring Ethiopia, Djibouti and the United Arab Emirates. Unlike Somalia, Somaliland is peaceful and stable and a functioning government is in charge. The country has an elected parliament and president.

Laas Gaal (Somali: Laas Geel) is a complex of caves and rock shelters in a region in northwestern Somalia that is famous for its cave paintings. The caves are located in a rural area on the outskirts of Hargeisa, and contain some of the earliest known rock art in the Horn of Africa and the African continent in general. Laas Gaal's cave paintings are estimated to date back to somewhere between 9,000--8,000 and 3,000 BCE. Simon Reeve Author and broadcaster, "Places That Don't Exist" who visited the autonomous northern State of Somaliland , said "Even under the scorching sun, the paintings had strong, vibrant colours and stark outlines, showing the ancient inhabitants of the area worshipping cattle. Laas Ga'al, it transpires, is probably the most significant Neolithic rock painting site in...
